CFI Fall Hammer-In October 14 & 15, 2023

10 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 5 PM
At Morgan Jade Ironworks at 2403 E Euclid Avenue

Whether it’s your first time forging or you’re a seasoned smith, we hope you’ll join us at the fall hammer-in and celebrate our decennial year! We hope you can come out and enjoy this gathering with us and help fuel CFI to keep working toward its mission of supporting and spreading the craft of blacksmithing in our community!

MORNING SESSIONS – BEGINNERS

We will be offering beginning blacksmithing instruction for newcomers or folks who need a refresher during the first half of each day. Those who register for a morning session will learn the basics and be able to make one of a variety of simple projects, like hooks, bottle openers, steak turners, bracelets, leaves, etc. with their instructor and using supplied materials. With your morning registration, which is $45, you are also welcome to stay and watch the forging in the afternoon. If you want to hammer the whole day, you can also sign up for a spot in our open forge in the afternoon (more info below) and continue practicing what you learned in the morning, just make sure to register for both sessions.

MORNING SESSIONS FULL!

AFTERNOON SESSIONS – OPEN FORGE

For Returning Blacksmiths: The afternoons be an open forge setup for experienced smiths to work on their own projects, experiment, and learn from each other. We ask that afternoon smiths bring their own steel*, though we will have a limited amount on hand that can be purchased at cost from the club if needed. We will be running both coke and propane forges, and we have 1/4″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ tongs, and a limited variety of punches and chisels. Feel free to bring your own tools to make your project. Registration for the afternoon session is $25 and helps cover the cost of fuel and our insurance. We will also have a few demos going on during the open forge: a Chefs Knife Demo by David Corn on Saturday and a Garden Spade Demo by Zach Robins on Sunday.

*If you need to purchase steel, some suppliers include: Alcobra Metals, Pacific Steel & Recycling, and Cd’A Metals.

CFI ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP

For Blacksmiths who want to bring their own shop or only want to watch: If you want to bring all your own gear (including forge, fuel, and anvil) to come out and forge with the club over the weekend, we just need you to become a paid member of CFI for insurance reasons. Same for if you’d like to come out and watch the forging in the afternoon but don’t want to forge. Dues are $25 Individual/$45 Household for the calendar year. If you already paid for membership at the spring hammer-in or the 2022 winter conference, please just shoot an email to smith@columbiafireandiron.org to RSVP. If all you need is a club membership because you are bringing your own forge or simply spectating, you can sign up below or take care of it at the door.

(If pop-ups disabled, open in browser here.)

Everyone will need to sign a liability to release (see waiver) at check-in, and teens 13 to 17 years old will need a guardian’s signature (younger than 16 will also need an adult present during the event). 13-year-old smiths are the youngest we can accommodate at the event.

CFI TAILGATE SALE! Have some tools, equipment, or steel laying around that you’d like to offload? Bring it to the hammer-in and sell it to your fellow smiths! Just $10 to vend, free to shop! Please email us (smith@columbiafireandiron.org) to let us know you’re coming and how much space you’ll need!

SCHOLARSHIPS

If you would like to attend the hammer-in but are financially unable at this time, please email an application to our Scholarship Chair, Melissa, at scholarships@columbiafireandiron.org. It is important to us that everyone be able to access the blacksmithing education that we offer, so we are working to provide a few scholarship spots at our events on an as-needed basis.

It’s CFI’s 10 year anniversary, and we will have our Decennial T-shirts and ladies tanks available at the hammer-in!

CFI is a 501(c)(3) Nonprofit and is entirely volunteer run. This is the club’s 10th year cultivating the blacksmithing community and spreading public awareness in the greater Spokane area, and we continue to adapt and grow as a blacksmithing club and a volunteer run non-profit. We appreciate everyone’s involvement in making CFI what it is today and helping to create its future! THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
