Our president Steve McGrew will be offering classes for young blacksmiths, proceeds to benefit Columbia Fire & Iron. Gift certificates will be available to print for giving this holiday season, and money raised will help CFI invest in more tools for the club’s next hammer-in in the spring.
Kids Beginning Blacksmithing Class
February 3, 2018 | 8am to noon OR 1pm to 5pm
This class will cover basic hammer skills and students will make nails, an S-hook, as well as a small coat hook or a leaf coat hook if other projects are completed in time.
4 slots available for each session
Kids Intermediate Blacksmithing Class
February 4, 2018 | 8am to noon OR 1pm to 5pm
Intended for young smiths who have some hammering experience, students will make “patch knives”: one-piece knives (often worn in a small sheath like a pendant) of the sort that black powder enthusiasts use to cut the patches they use in loading and cleaning their rifles. The knives will be hardened and tempered, but will NOT be sharp at the end of the class. Steve will demonstrate how to sharpen them, so (with parental supervision) students can sharpen them at home.
4 slots available for each session
Each 4-hour class will cost $50. Gas forges will be used but a coke/coal forge will also be demonstrated.
