It is important to line your gas forge for both your health and safety and to extend the life of your forge. On April 5th we hosted a free forge lining event at the Hillyard Library for folks to bring in their forges and line them. We use Satanite Refractory Mortar, which can be purchased online for about $20 for 5lbs. Mix it with water to a milkshake consistency and brush it onto the wool inside your forge. You can apply a couple to several coats, and you want to cover all exposed wool. Allowing it to dry slowly will help avoid cracking, but the mortar can be touched up as needed.

Satanite can be reconstituted, so save your application brush and cup! You can let it dry out when you’re done and then just add water to it the next time you need some!
